The 2021 Classic Literature On Film Blogathon Is Here – Day One

Hello everyone and I’m excited that the 2021 Classic Literature On Film Blogathon has begun. I hope you are also looking forward to reading some fantastic articles as well as be inspired to watch the films we haven’t and or revisit those we have with a new and different perspective.

Here are some of our entries. (I’ve cheated a little and will include my most recent article)

      How can anyone not love The Wind In The Willows? I’ve seen a number of versions over the years and on the whole they capture the beauty of the book and not losing the integrity of the wonderful characters.

      It can be tough to revisit such classics on screen because it can affect how we remember those loved stories through the lens of childhood. Thankfully I’ve never faced that disappointment with The Wind In The Willows!

    2. Not sure if my comment got through – there always seems to be a problem for me posting comments on some blogs:

      Don’t we need cheerfulness more than ever? In the world we have at the moment, cheerfulness is at a premium. I’ve never seen the Pickford version and remember the Hayley Mills version as a kid. I think you draw a fascinating key theme that transcends the saccharine if we look deep enough and truly appreciate the key character. I never saw beyond the saccharine element of Pollyanna, not being able to see the key theme you discuss eloquently; especially as a kid. But this is why I love blogathons as you always get to learn something and discover new perspectives and possibilities. Which means I need to watch these versions of Pollyanna!

        Thanks also for your kind words. The Hayley Mills version of Pollyanna was the first one I saw, and I was so moved I was reaching for the tissue by the time it was done.

        Finally, thank you for organizing/hosting this blogathon. Will it make an appearance next year (hint hint)?

      I love the 1948 version and have written on it as a ‘comfort film’ simply because it’s an MGM film made with all the production values of the classic MGM studio era. You write beautifully about what makes the film so much fun: the cast is strong, the action is great and the settings and colour are superb and add to the whole aesthetic of a beautiful film to watch. Lana Turner’s first colour film too! And I love how excerpts from it turn up in Singing’ In The Rain.

I also haven’t seen ‘Singin’ In The Rain’, as I’ll try to watch it for Pure Entertainment Preservation Society’s Clean Movie Month. Thanks also for allowing me to join the blogathon!
